Fresh Organic Produce Delivered From our Family to Yours!

Top 10 Tips for Helping Children Eat Healthy

This is from our good friends Jim and Monica Brown of Yourhealthsourceblog.org. Check them out for more tips and receipts.

1. Make a list with your spouse or friend of what is wrong with you (or your child’s) health and what you want to see change.

2. Decide in advance and commit to one another what you will and will not eat.

3. Plan ahead for the week.  Include snacks in your plan.

4. Only offer healthy choices.

5. Don’t buy or have in your house what you don’t want to eat.

6. Choose one specific night for “splurging” to keep it from migrating into more than one night.

7. Make “better bad choices” when you need to compromise.

8. Don’t reward with food or associate it with emotions for yourself or your children.

9. Choose foods with only natural ingredients and with no additives or preservatives.

10.  When reading labels, if you can’t pronounce it, don’t eat it!

Transitioning to the Dark Side

For years I believed that the people who ate Organic were totally kooky. To me it made no sense, why spend twice as much money on produce with a special sticker? I even had friends who ate purely organic and if they ever ate conventional they would get sick; it made no sense! What is the big deal about organic anyways? Then my family and I began to hear stories of organic versus conventional produce and the transitional period started.

Transitioning your mind set can be a difficult and lengthy process. I once say a quote that said; "every accomplishment starts with a decision to try" (anonymous) and that is definitely true in this instance. Eating organic actually has a lot of benefits and once you begin to understand them transitioning to an organic mindset will be easier. If you want to learn about more of the benefits of eating organic, or the harm of eating conventional, check out some of our previous blog posts. Many illnesses are directly related to the things that you eat. So, if eating organic will help you and your loved ones live a better, healthier, and longer life, why would you not eat organic?

Once my family and I started investing in eating organic, we realized a few very surprising things. The more produce you ate, the more produce you wanted to eat. Your body craves what it needs, but we have trained our bodies to "want" things such as sugar and high fructose corn syrup. By not eating those things, and reintroducing healthy, organic produce our bodies realize what they have been missing and start desiring more.

Another thing we realized, is that organic is addicting. Once you start eating organic produce, especially organic fruit, you will realize that your foodie friends weren't lying. Organic really does tasted better! Because the produce is vine ripened and not genetically modified, it is able to carry the proper nutrients and reach its greatest potential for flavor. My sister has officially refused to eat conventional bananas, because organic taste so much better!

Yes, transitioning your mind set and eating habits to encompass organic is a difficult task, but the health and flavor rewards are endless.      So what is keeping you from trying? Make your decision to try, and transition to the dark side.

Coconut Oil - Beneficial or Not?

b2ap3_thumbnail_rsz_dollarphotoclub_32363593.jpg

For years people have gone back and forth about whether or not Coconut oil is healthy for you. The critics will always be out there, but Big Sky Family Food believes that there is a lot of benefit in using coconut oil verses vegetable oil. Studies have shown that pure coconut oil contains a unique collection of healthy fatty acids, improves lipids, helps you loose weight, and coconut oil's structure often breaks down into Ketone bodies which help the brain and help fight against epilepsy. These are only a few of the reasons why using coconut oil is helpful and beneficial to your body.

Coconut oil is not only good for cooking, but for personal hygiene as well.

Coconut oil is a great conditioner, body lotion, cuticle softener, under-eye cream, frizz fighter, makeup remover, shaving cream, as well as having many other uses.

Lip balm is a great way to use coconut oil. Put a little coconut oil in an old contact container and you are set to have a healthy and portable solution to dry lips.

Make a batch of body scrub using coconut oil and give it out as healthy, inexpensive gifts for your girlfriends: "Mix a half cup of sea salt or sugar with an equal amount of melted coconut oil, and then use your hands to rub it over any rough patches of skin. The scrub moisturizes while removing dead skin cells." (Health.com)

To order coconut oil in bulk just message us. We will add it to our next dry goods order and bring it with your produce.

Free Range versus Store Bought

b2ap3_thumbnail_rsz_dollarphotoclub_72268173.jpg

Big Sky Family Foods is proud to provide local farm fresh eggs for our customers. We do this for two simple reasons:

1) We believe that, as a local business, it is our job to help support the local farmers. We do this in as many ways as we can including buying farm fresh eggs from them.

2) We believe that farm fresh, free range, and organic eggs are healthier then store bought and this is why:

Studies show that farm fresh eggs have 1/3 less cholesterol, 1/4 less saturated fast, 2/3 more vitamin A, 2 times more omega-3 fatty acids, 3 times more vitamin E, and 7 times more beta carotene then store bought eggs.

Besides these wonderful and obvious benefits of farm fresh eggs one thing we like about them is that it insures the care of the chickens. When raised on a small, local farm it is practically a guarantee that the chickens are well taken care of, which will cause the eggs to be beneficial and highly nutritious.

If you don't believe us, purchase a few dozen from us and see if you like them better then store bought.

Juicing for Nutrition

b2ap3_thumbnail_rsz_1rsz_dollarphotoclub_68542107.jpg

Did you know that we would need to eat eight pounds of spinach in order to get the equivalent amount of nutrients you ingest in one 16 oz glass of juice? 95% of the nutrients our bodies need are in the juice of raw produce. By drinking the juice of produce you are allowing the nutrients to get directly into your bloodstream; causing it to absorb quicker and be even more beneficial. It is suggested that you drink the juice on an empty stomach. Once the produce is juiced, and the juice touches the air, the juice begins to oxidize: greatly hurting the nutritional value. We know it is hard to eat things right away, so if you are going to store your juice it would be beneficial to store it in an air tight jar in the refrigerator. "There is lots of research that shows the healing properties of juicing. Not only will juicing facilitate weight loss, increased energy levels, strengthened immunity, strong bones and a glowing complexion, it may also reduce chances of heart disease, cancer and strokes, three of the leading causes of death."

Big Sky Family Foods wants to make it easier for you to take care of your family, but we know that, for an avid juicer, the produce in the tubs are not enough. That is why we offer to order you bulk produce. If you are going to start juicing and you know that you will want lots of a certain vegetable just let us know! We may be able to make it happen for you.

The Benefits of a Home Cooked Meal

b2ap3_thumbnail_rsz_dollarphotoclub_34113617.jpg

Cooking your meals at home allows you to have a greater standard for what your family eats on a daily basis. From textures and flavors to sugar coated or healthy you will know exactly what you are putting in your mouth and where it came from. Although it takes longer to make a filling meal then it does to order a pizza, the benefits greatly outweigh the drawbacks. Healthy eating creates a stronger, more energetic you.

There is more to healthy eating then avoiding vending machines and cafeteria lunches. Many factors play into cooking and eating healthy. Fresh produce, MSG free meat, and Nitrate free foods, all play important parts in healthy eating. The items we put in our system effect more then we might think. High fructose corn syrup, pesticides, MSG, and GMO can all be directly linked to health problems. When you cook your own meals you have the ability to decide what goes into your food. Whether or not you choose to go the extra mile and buy organic is up to you. Although organic is highly beneficial it is also more costly then generic. Cooking at home is not only healthier, but it tastes better as well. You get to decide what you like, what you don't like, how you want to cook it, and even how much variety you eat. Having more control is definitely a befit to cooking your own meals.

The average family is typically on a tight budget. With the economy down, jobs are hard to find and living expenses are typically higher. A common response to this is tightening up the grocery budget, or eliminating it almost entirely, and eating out more often. Spending small amounts of money is a lot easier to swallow then one large grocery bill. But when your accounts are done at the end of the month you will realize that even though it may be easier to swallow at the time it will be painful on your pocket in the long run. Eating out may look good, but it is typically very costly, and not a good long term plan. By buying groceries, that you can make your dinners out of, you will be spending less money in the long run and getting more value for your dollar. Buying organic produce is beneficial for your health but can be painful for your budget. Eating organic will most definitely show up on your budget numbers. Your families budget will probably be the deciding factor on whether or not you can afford to eat entirely organic. Big Sky Family Foods is created to help your family be able to afford buying organic.

Cooking doesn't have to be a chore; trying new recipes can be a grand adventure. Although a lot of people look at cooking as just another thing to do it should be viewed as an adventure. Cooking allows you to use all five of your senses. Hearing - in the unique sounds of each different object cooking. Sight - in the colorful appearance of the dishes. Smell- in the delicious aroma of what you are cooking. Touch -in the hands on aspect of cutting, mixing, and plating your masterpiece. Taste - in treating yourself to the delicious finished product. By cooking different types of food you get to learn about different cultures and experience a little bit of what other people experience every day. It is such a unique experience getting to try different recipes, different combinations of flavors, and different spices. It is quite thrilling getting to put a colorful plate out on a table and have people devour it and ask for more. Cooking your own meals isn't a chore, it is a treat.

The majority of people don't cook their own meals anymore. It has become something that only happens "at "grandma's house", a memory, or a special treat. Houses are being built with smaller kitchens, because people don't use them anymore, and a raising number of our generation don't even know how to cook properly. Although many people believe that eating out is better for their budget they don't realize that not only is it hurtful to their bank account, but it is also hurtful to their body. Our body was built to function on clean, pure foods; not genetically modified and thoroughly processed products. Give it a chance: try cooking your own meals for a month and let it prove to you that is better on your budget, better on your body, and more fun.

Wait, it is radiated?!

b2ap3_thumbnail_dip.jpg

There are so many reasons why eating organic is necessary for your family's health. It would take more then just one blog a week to tell you them all, but one of the biggest reasons is irradiation. Irradiation is the process of radiating produce with three particular types of rays: Gama Rays, X-Rays, and Electron Beams. Now many people say that Irradiation causes produce to be radioactive; although this isn't typically true, it does have many negative affects on the produce. Radiating produce breaks down and destroys enzymes, vitamins, and good bacterias. Causing the produce to be virtually nutrition less. Organic produce is not irradiated; this ensures that the produce maintains it's healthy nutrients and vitamins.

So why should you eat organic? Because organic gives you delicious, flavorful produce and provides the maximum amount of nutrients.

Organic Matters

b2ap3_thumbnail_rsz_dollarphotoclub_55076002.jpg Supporting and growing the organic agricultural industry is beneficial for a multitude of reasons. A shocking amount of the nations health and prosperity is controlled by the food grown and eaten. Many people forget that our digestive systems were not created to eat genetically modified organisms, or that, if our crop industry died, our economic system would fail. The food industry is the third largest industry in the world. Protecting the food industry is smart, but fostering the organic agricultural industry will be even better for the health of our nation.

Studies have shown that the food we eat and the diseases that ail us are directly related. An article, written in 2005, showed that cancer rates have skyrocketed. Lymphoblastic leukemia is up 10.7% in twenty years. Brain cancer is up 30 percent, osteogenic sarcoma (a type of bone cancer) is up 50%, and testicular cancer is up 60% - specifically in men under thirty. The studies that proved these statistics (Dr. Fuhrman - Disease-Proof Your Child) showed a common item as the reason: Pesticides. Simply put, children who breathe large amounts of pesticides and chemicals, at a young age, are more likely to get cancer when older. Breathe pesticides – the studies showed that breathing pesticides caused high elevation in cancer risk; it would be excessive to mention what ingesting the pesticides would do to our youth. It is commonly known that non-organic produce is heavily sprayed with pesticides, fungicides, and herbicides; yet many people do not know that 60% of all herbicides, 90% of all fungicides, and 30% of all pesticides are carcinogenic. (www.shapefit.com) Approximately 20% of our produce is imported (Chrys Ostrander). It is estimated by the USDA that only 1-2% of the imported produce is tested for pesticide residue and the tests used to do so can only detect about half of the pesticides used world wide (www.shapefit.com). So although America has begun banning harmful pesticides from being used on nationally grown produce, they are not adequately preventing sprayed produce from being imported.

The food industry is America's third largest industry. Over “21 million American workers produce, process and sell the nations food and fiber.” (www.fb.org) Without the food industry there would be millions of people out of jobs, sending the economy into a tail spin. Evidently, not only is food necessary for people's health, but also for the economy's health. Considering the current unemployment rate, America can not sustain an employment drop. “In 2010, $115 billion worth of American agricultural products were exported around the world. The United States sells more food and fiber to world markets than we import, creating a positive agricultural trade balance.” (www.fiber.org) With the country being approximately 17.53 trillion dollars in debt, America can not afford to loose the money flow from the food industry.

For this reason, my family started an organic produce delivery business. Big Sky Family Foods delivers fresh organic produce to people's doorsteps for better value then you can buy in stores. People are highly protective of their time; therefore, by delivering produce directly to them, money and time are saved, making people more willing to eat healthy. It also helps with availability. Big Sky Family Foods has two different sized tubs. The larger tub feeds 4-5 people and the smaller tub feeds 3-4 people. Not only are the different sized tubs delivered every other week, but our costumers are also offered bulk produce orders, organic dry goods, and natural hygiene items. However, supporting the industry can be painful to the community, and that is why we buy local. Big Sky Family Foods delivers organic produce all year round, but during the growing season we support our local agricultural economy by buying local produce. The small time farmers are a huge support of organic eating, but sometimes it is hard for a small business to survive against the business sharks. To help promote local business, we purchase as much locally as we can.

Big Sky Family Foods wants to make organic eating available not only to the rich, but the suburban house wife as well. In order to accomplish this task, Big Sky Family Foods orders produce in such a way that allows us to provide it at a lower price, making it more easily available to all. The availability of organic produce is crucial for economy and health. Big Sky Family Foods was founded to help foster our local food industry and make organic produce more easily available. Eating organic is crucial for health, and the food industry is crucial for the economy. Big Sky Family Foods supports both; this fosters the health of our community as well as supports the organic and natural food industry.

Yes, it is healthier to eat organic!

Did you know that non-organic produce is irradiated?

To become irradiated, food is subjected to one of three different types of ray:
Gamma rays
Electron beams
X-rays
The energy from these rays breaks apart microbes, causing them to either die or no longer be able to reproduce, eliminating spoilage.
Irradiation can
-lower protein content as much as 80%
-leave traces of radiation
-damage enzymes in the food causing it to be difficult to digest.

There are many other ways that eating organic is healthier then eating non-organic produce. Eating organic will help protect your family from pesticides, radiation, and GMOs. Studies have shown that 18% of genetically modified seeds are created to produce their own pesticides. It is thought that these fruits and vegetables continue producing pesticides while still in your stomach. Organic produce is grown from organic seeds and is not sprayed with pesticides or irradiated.

We want to help you protect your family from radiation and unhealthy produce; that is why Big Sky Family Foods was created. To make eating healthy cheaper and easier for your family.
